This is a Native American centered book about a young Native American boy during his early years. We see how he grows into a warrior and all of the lessons he has learned through his youth years and the struggles he and his tribe deal with. As he grows up, he is taken by white men, grows up to be a doctor, and then meets his Native American tribe again as a man.

You get to see a man throughout his whole life and all the challenges that he faces. You see him as he grows into a warrior with his family and friends, then you see him transform into a different person when he's around the white culture. As he is with his homeland after experiencing "the white people", he sees life in a whole new way.
Classroom uses for this book:
Children can relate to this book in a number of ways depending on their own experiences. Some students have to deal with being uprooted from their comfortable home life and having to experience something completely different and it's a hard change, especially for middle school aged children. Having the students form lit circles with this book and having them come up with a project revolving around social changes and culture shock could be an interesting way to start a unit plan.
